War Haul
Producer, First Assistant Director, Interviewer.
Quinton Teodori AKA War Haul approached directors Lucas and Kevin to direct a short video to capture the essence of his tattoo practice. In an effort to match War Haul’s artistry through the medium in which they chose to capture him at work, Kevin and Lucas resolved to exclusively shoot all footage on 16mm film.
Given the challenges of shooting on film, in a small second floor apartment with a tight knit crew, Lucas brought me on as producer and first assistant director to address the challenges of this spirited production.
I spent the day on set soaking in Quinton’s world, ensuring our schedule was maintained, the shot list was organized and the crew was taken care of.
Once principle photography was complete, our next step was recording Qinton’s narration.
I had already engaged in discussion with Quinton about what War Haul meant to him while watching him work; I was able to craft interview questions to help Quinton succinctly compose a narrative about his philosophy as an artist. The responses I was able to evoke from him were woven together with the textured visuals to create a vivid story of the world that existed in a small residential apartment that doubled as a tattoo studio.
“People find a little bit of their identity in it. I want people to look at my work and my transparency with how I’m operating and think, I could do this myself, and I can do this in my own way. I can do this better, I can do this in a way that gives me fulfilment.”
